General Post Office, Kolkata, Heritage post office in BBD Bagh, India

The General Post Office is a white building with a ribbed dome rising over 220 feet on a drum of round-headed windows. Below, a curved facade of round-headed arches on carved-capital columns faces Netaji Subhas Road in B. B. D. Bagh. A large clock with black numerals sits on the left of the drum, with a flagpole above.

Built between 1864 and 1868 based on architect Walter B. Grenville's plans, the structure replaced Old Fort William that previously occupied this location. The new building marked a shift from military to civilian use of the site.

The GPO is one of five Philatelic Bureaus in India authorised to sell United Nations stamps; the bureau sits at the southwestern end of the building. A postal museum built in 1884 holds stamps and postal artefacts, and a sculpture of "Runner", after a poem by Sukanta Bhattacharya, stands on the site. Since June 2022 the east wing lounge has housed the in-house Parcel Café, branded Shiuli.

The GPO stands on Netaji Subhas Road in B. B. D. Bagh, near BBD Bagh Railway Station. The Philatelic Bureau, one of five in India authorised to sell United Nations stamps, is at the southwestern end of the building. The Parcel Café (branded Shiuli) opened in June 2022 in the east wing lounge, the first in-house café at an Indian post office.

A brass plate on the eastern staircase marks the exact spot where the original Fort William's eastern boundary once ran. This small marker shows where the colonial military stronghold gave way to the modern postal building.
