The General Post Office building features a 220-foot domed roof supported by Ionic-Corinthian pillars and functions as West Bengal's largest postal facility.
Constructed between 1864 and 1868 under architect Walter B. Grenville's design, this structure stands on the former site of Old Fort William.
The building houses a postal museum established in 1884 that displays collections of stamps and artifacts representing India's postal heritage.
Visitors can access various postal services, including international mail dispatch, registered post, and postal life insurance, from 10 AM to 6 PM on weekdays.
A brass plate on the eastern staircase marks the exact location where the original Fort William's eastern boundary once stood.
