General Post Office, Kolkata

The General Post Office is a large building with a 220-foot domed roof supported by Ionic and Corinthian columns that rise from the main structure. It serves as West Bengal's main postal facility and processes all major mail services from this central location.

Built between 1864 and 1868 based on architect Walter B. Grenville's plans, the structure replaced Old Fort William that previously occupied this location. The new building marked a shift from military to civilian use of the site.

The building houses a postal museum with collections of stamps and postal artifacts that document India's mail service history. Visitors can explore original items from different periods of how the postal system developed.

The building is open on weekdays from 10 AM to 6 PM and provides access to various postal services including international mail and insurance options. The entrance is easy to find and the interior is clearly marked to help visitors navigate the space.

A brass plate on the eastern staircase marks the exact spot where the original Fort William's eastern boundary once ran. This small marker shows where the colonial military stronghold gave way to the modern postal building.
