The Metro Cinema building features vertical signage, a stepped facade, and geometric patterns characteristic of 1930s architectural design in downtown Kolkata.
New York architect Thomas W. Lamb designed this cinema hall, which opened its doors in 1935 under the management of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios.
After screening English-language films for decades, the theater shifted to Hindi cinema in 1972, marking a transformation in local entertainment preferences.
The renovated structure now contains two screens with 422 seats, multiple shopping areas, and a food court for modern entertainment needs.
This Grade I heritage building influenced residential architecture in post-1947 Kolkata, leading to the creation of numerous metro-style houses across the city.
