Eden Gardens, Cricket field in Kolkata, India
Eden Gardens is a cricket stadium in Ward 45 of Kolkata, West Bengal, with capacity for 68,000 spectators seated in multi-tiered stands around the central playing field. The complex includes practice areas, changing rooms, and a clubhouse overlooking the grass surface.
The ground opened in 1864 and grew into one of the oldest cricket venues outside England. In 1934, it hosted its first international Test match between India and England, giving the venue international status.
The name comes from the adjacent Eden Gardens park, which connects the playing area to the wider neighborhood around it. On match days, the air fills with cheers and the smell of street food, while vendors move through the crowds selling snacks and team colors.
Multiple entrances around the stadium allow access to different sections, with signage leading to numbered seating areas and facilities. Arriving early before major matches helps navigate the security checks and locate your seat.
The 2001 match against Australia ended with an Indian victory after the team was forced to follow on, with VVS Laxman scoring 281 runs. This win is often remembered as one of the most memorable moments in Indian cricket history.
