Maulana Azad College

Maulana Azad College is a liberal arts institution in Kolkata offering bachelor's and master's programs across several disciplines. The facility belongs to the University of Calcutta and contains lecture halls, a library, and administrative offices within a heritage-protected building.

The college was founded in 1926 during British colonial rule as an educational facility for the growing urban population. After independence, the institution was named to honor a minister who shaped national education policy.

The college bears the name of a scholar who served as India's first education minister after independence. The main building shows colonial-era construction with high ceilings and wide corridors that now serve as gathering spaces for students.

Entry is through the main gate on a busy street, with the campus open during daytime class hours. Visitors should be mindful of student movement, as corridors fill during breaks between lectures.

The facade displays original terracotta decorations from the construction period that have survived despite tropical climate and air pollution. Within the grounds, several old trees grow that are said to predate the building itself.
