Elgin Fairlawn, Heritage hotel in Sudder Street, Kolkata, India
The Elgin Fairlawn occupies a white colonial building with arched windows, verandas with wooden furniture, and wrought-iron railings overlooking the streets of Kolkata.
Built in 1783 during Warren Hastings' governance, the residence turned into a hotel in 1936 and served as 'Canada House' for Canadian Airforce personnel during World War II.
The hotel became a meeting point for artists, with actor Shashi Kapoor meeting his future wife Jennifer Kendal there, leading to Room 17 being named after him.
