Mara Autonomous District Council, Autonomous district council in Siaha, India
Mara Autonomous District Council is an administrative region in southern Mizoram with rolling hills and forest cover along the Myanmar border. Its headquarters in Siaha manages departments including education, forestry, and public health services for the district.
This administrative district emerged in 1971 from the Pawi-Lakher Regional Council, originally called Lakher Autonomous District before being renamed in 1988. Its creation reflected the desire of local people to manage their own affairs.
The Mara community shapes daily life through their own celebrations and traditional music that remain visible in local gatherings. These cultural expressions form part of how people here maintain their identity and connect with their heritage.
Administrative services operate on weekdays, and visiting works best during drier months when mountain roads are easier to travel. Using local guides and gathering local information beforehand helps, as this is a remote region with limited tourist infrastructure.
Mount Mawma, the region's highest peak, and Pala Lake, Mizoram's largest water body, both lie within this district. These natural features draw those interested in exploring mountains and lakes in the area.
