Lucknow Zoo, Zoological garden in Lucknow, India.
The Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Prani Udyan is a zoological garden in Lucknow with over 900 animals from more than 100 species across 71 acres (29 hectares). The grounds hold Bengal tigers, grey wolves, Asiatic lions, and a state museum featuring objects from Awadh's history, including an Egyptian mummy dated to 1000 BC.
The garden opened in 1921 to mark the Prince of Wales's visit to Lucknow, with Sir Harcourt Butler leading the founding effort. The timber transport train from Maharajganj was built in 1924 and later moved here, where it now stands on display between animal enclosures.
The old British train parked between enclosures reminds visitors of the colonial past while they walk under mature trees that have grown through decades. School groups often come here for educational trips, and families gather on weekends to watch animals and spend time together outdoors in the greenery.
Opening hours change with the seasons, so checking current times before visiting helps plan the day better. School groups of 50 students or more receive reduced admission, and animal presentations with an educational focus are available for groups.
The 1924 train originally transported timber through the forests of northern India before being placed as a stationary exhibit. The museum inside the park displays Mughal-era objects alongside the ancient Egyptian mummy, documenting the history of the Awadh region.
