Natadreeswarar Temple, Hindu temple in Kodumudi, India
Natadreeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, set on a small rocky island in the Kaveri River in Tamil Nadu, India. It is built across several levels, with stone carvings covering the towers and walls of the complex.
The temple was founded in the 10th century under the Chola dynasty as a place of worship for Shiva. Later rulers added sections and carvings over the centuries, but the original form of the complex has stayed largely intact.
During Tamil New Year, devotees gather along the riverbank to offer flowers and prayers at the water's edge, making the site feel like a living center of community life. The rituals here follow patterns that have been passed down through generations in the region.
The temple is reachable from Erode by bus, with a short walk from the Nal Road stop to reach the site. It is a good idea to bring water and food, since there are few facilities close to the entrance.
An ancient Athee tree grows on a bare rock inside the temple grounds and has not produced new branches for over 3,000 years. It stands without any soil around its roots, rooted directly onto the stone surface.
