Raj Bhavan, Governmental residence in Aizawl, India
Raj Bhavan is the official residence in Aizawl housing multiple functional areas within a single complex. The building contains a Durbar Hall for formal gatherings, administrative office rooms, household facilities, and six furnished guest rooms for visiting officials.
The original structure was built in 1898 using local jungle timber and bamboo materials with a bamboo shingled roof. This early construction formed the foundation for the present-day administrative building.
The gardens blend orange trees from the Chin Hills with oak trees from Champhai, showing how regional plants were brought together intentionally. Visitors notice how this combination reflects the area's natural diversity in a cultivated setting.
The property sits in a settled area near administrative buildings where most foot traffic occurs during business hours. Protective walls shield the grounds from strong local winds, making the gardens more comfortable to explore year-round.
The terrace area features a retaining wall with steps built into one corner that creates different levels across the grounds. This structural design works with the sloping terrain rather than against it, making practical use of the hillside location.
