Surendranath College, college of West Bengal
Surendranath College is a higher education institution in Kolkata located on Mahatma Gandhi Road, offering courses in science, arts, and commerce. The campus features older and newer buildings set around planted grounds where students gather between classes and in study areas.
Founded in 1882 as Presidency School, the institution later became Ripon College before being renamed in 1948 to honor its founder. It played a role in India's independence movement when Swami Vivekananda spoke there in 1897 and many students participated in social activism.
The college is named after Surendranath Banerjea, an independence leader whose ideals continue to shape the institution. On any day, you see students gathered in small groups discussing lessons and sitting in shade under old trees, reflecting a tradition of shared learning.
The campus is centrally located in Kolkata and easily accessible by the city's tram network and main roads. The best time to visit is outside peak hours and not during exam periods when the campus is less busy.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the college produced a low-cost disinfectant that met World Health Organization standards and distributed it free to the local community. This shows how the institution extends its commitment to wellbeing beyond academic teaching.
