Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary, Bird sanctuary in Sivaganga District, India.
Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary is a protected area in Tamil Nadu built around three linked irrigation tanks edged by shallow banks and low trees. The open water draws both migratory and resident birds that come here to breed and feed.
The sanctuary was formally declared in 1977, after observers noticed that migratory birds were regularly stopping at the old irrigation tanks in the area. The tanks themselves are much older, originally built to support local farming before the site became a refuge for birds.
Vettangudi is a known stop for birdwatchers from across India, who come during the nesting season to watch colonies of herons, cormorants, and spoonbills at close range. The birds nest in trees directly over the water, so visitors can observe them without much effort.
The best time to visit is between November and March, when migratory birds arrive and the heat is more bearable. Sturdy footwear and an early morning start are recommended, as birds are most active at that time of day.
Although the site covers a small area, researchers have recorded over 40 bird species here, including species that are rarely seen so close together elsewhere. This density of bird life in a compact space is what draws observers back repeatedly.
