Visvesvaraya Technological University, State university in Belgaum, India
Visvesvaraya Technological University is a public technical university in Belgaum, in the state of Karnataka. It coordinates over two hundred affiliated engineering colleges across the state and offers bachelor, master, and doctoral programs in technical disciplines.
The institution was founded on April 1, 1998, through a state act of Karnataka to better manage technical higher education. It emerged from the need to centrally organize and oversee engineering courses in the growing state.
The name honors an Indian engineer and statesman whose legacy continues to shape technical education across Karnataka. Students from all corners of the state meet here and exchange regional approaches to solving technical challenges.
The main campus, Jnana Sangama, sits north of Belgaum and can be reached by bus or car from the city. Visitors should note that the campus lies outside the city center and requires use of local transport.
Since 2015, students can assemble courses from core, elective, and foundation subjects themselves, which is still relatively rare in India. This flexibility allows them to combine technical and nontechnical topics according to personal interest.
