Wasseypur, Coal mining neighborhood in Dhanbad, India.
Wasseypur is a settlement in Dhanbad district in the state of Jharkhand, India, located on the Chota Nagpur Plateau. Narrow lanes wind through densely built residential quarters that spread among the structures of the coal industry.
The settlement developed in the early 20th century as a center for coal extraction in the region. The area shifted from Bengal administration through Bihar until the creation of Jharkhand state in 2000.
The population of over 200,000 residents represents multiple linguistic communities, with Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, and Santhali commonly spoken throughout the area.
Dhanbad Junction railway station connects the area to other cities across India and sits near the residential quarter. The three operational zones of Bharat Coking Coal Limited are accessible through local roads.
A two-part film from 2012 brought international attention to the area by telling the story of local family conflicts. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of the coal industry and shaped the image of the region in modern Indian cinema.
