Jallianwala Bagh, Historic site in Amritsar, India.
Jallianwala Bagh is a memorial in Amritsar that consists of a walled garden with a central monument. The site still shows the original walls and the well into which people jumped during the shooting.
British troops opened fire here in April 1919 without warning on a peaceful gathering for the spring festival of Vaisakhi. The tragedy strengthened resistance to colonial rule across the country.
The site preserves bullet holes in the walls as visible evidence and serves visitors as a place to remember those who died in the massacre. Families and groups gather here to reflect and lay wreaths.
The entrance is on a quiet side street near the Golden Temple, and most visitors spend about an hour on the grounds. The museum is housed in a separate building inside the garden.
An old tree stands in the corner of the garden and bore scars from the shots fired that day. The well in the middle is about 30 ft (9 m) deep and was sealed after the events, then reopened later.
