Khilla Ghanpur, 13th century fortification in Mahabubnagar District, India
Khilla Ghanpur is a hilltop fortification in Telangana, India, built across a rocky area between two peaks. The walls and structures are made of stone and mud, shaped to follow the natural slope of the terrain.
The fort was built in the 13th century under the Kakatiya dynasty to help control and defend this part of the region. Over time, it changed hands as different powers took control of Telangana.
The name Khilla Ghanpur comes from the Kakatiya dynasty that ruled this part of Telangana during medieval times. Walking through the remaining walls, you can still see how the builders used the natural shape of the rock to reinforce the defenses.
The fort is reached on foot via a hike of around two hours from the base, so starting early in the day is a good idea. The path crosses rocky and uneven ground, so sturdy footwear is strongly advised.
Two hidden tunnels were built inside the fort walls, serving as secret escape or supply routes. One is said to have led to a nearby village, and the other connected to another fortification not far away.
