The Pandalam dynasty ruled a kingdom in the Pathanamthitta region with centers in Konni and Sabarimala in present-day Kerala. The Pandalam Palace displays traditional Kerala architecture with its preserved structures situated along the Achankovil river.
The dynasty originated from the Pandya kingdom and established rule in 903 CE after migrating from Madurai to Kerala to escape Nayak invasions. This southward threat prompted the founding of their new kingdom in the region.
The Valiyakoikkal temple, built by Raja Rajasekhara, holds deep religious meaning for local worshippers and remains central to annual ceremonies in the region. It reflects the royal family's long spiritual connection to this sacred place.
