Punalur Suspension Bridge

The iron bridge stretches over the Kallada River with a width of 20 feet and a length of 400 feet, supported by two large arch-shaped pillars.

Built in 1877 under British engineer Albert Henry's supervision, this structure became the first suspension bridge constructed in South India during colonial rule.

The bridge connects local communities on both riverbanks, enabling trade routes between Kerala and Tamil Nadu while serving as a gathering point for regional festivals.

Located near major roadways with direct public transport access, the bridge allows visitors to explore daily from sunrise to sunset throughout the year.

The bridge structure incorporates four underground wells on both banks, where chains anchor deep into the ground to maintain stability and balance.
