Punalur Suspension Bridge

The Punalur Suspension Bridge is an iron structure spanning across the Kallada River, supported by two large arch-shaped pillars. The design features a series of chains and cables that transfer the weight of the deck down to anchor points embedded deep underground on both banks.

This structure was completed in 1877 and was the first suspension bridge built in South India during the British colonial period. Its construction represented an advancement in regional infrastructure and demonstrated modern engineering techniques of that era.

The bridge links the riverbanks and serves as a meeting point where local people cross daily for work and social life. It has long been part of how neighboring communities interact and trade with one another.

The bridge is open to visitors year-round and is best explored during daylight hours when you can see the structure clearly. It is located near main roads and accessible by public transport from the surrounding area.

The structure relies on four underground wells positioned on both banks where anchor chains descend to provide stability and support. This engineering approach was an inventive solution for handling the forces exerted on a suspension bridge during that period.
