Lakshana Devi Temple, Bharmour

The Lakshana Devi Temple is a sanctuary featuring traditional mountain architecture with ornately carved wooden elements and a three-tiered structure rising above the ground. Inside, the temple displays detailed woodwork showing river goddesses and other religious figures, all arranged around a central inner chamber.

This temple was built around 680 CE during the reign of Meru Varman and remains among the oldest structures in what was once the capital of a Hindu mountain kingdom. Its survival through the centuries reflects the durability of the construction methods used in these highland regions.

This temple honors the goddess Lakshana Devi and houses a brass image of Durga within its sanctum, reflecting the local devotional practices. The wooden carvings throughout display stories from Hindu traditions that remain meaningful to visitors and worshippers who gather here.

The temple is located in Bharmour, a mountain village that is most easily reached during warmer months when roads are clear. It is best to wear sturdy shoes and prepare for uneven ground and stairs, since the sanctuary sits on an elevated platform.
