Chaurasi Temple Bharmour, Hindu temple complex in Bharmour, India.
Chaurasi Temple is a group of 84 shrines arranged around a central courtyard in Bharmour, a small mountain town in Himachal Pradesh, India. The shrines sit close together on a hillside slope, rising and falling with the terrain.
The complex was founded in the 7th century by Raja Meru, who made Bharmour the capital of his kingdom and established this site as a spiritual center. More shrines were added over the following generations, giving the complex the form it has today.
Pilgrims move through the shrines in sequence, creating a ritual path that shapes how people experience the space. Each temple within the complex serves a specific role in local worship practices.
The best time to visit is between May and November, when snow has cleared and mountain paths are open. The walkways inside are steep and the elevation is high, so a slow pace is a good idea.
The Nandi statue in front of the Manimahesh Temple sits in a pose that differs from what is seen at most other shrines across India. Visitors who know other temples will notice this right away, as a standing Nandi is far more common elsewhere.
