Phulo Jhano Murmu Medical College and Hospital, Medical college and hospital in Dumka, India.
Phulo Jhano Murmu Medical College and Hospital is a public medical college and hospital located in Dumka, the administrative headquarters of Jharkhand state in India. The campus brings together teaching facilities, clinical wards, and departments covering general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and orthopedics under one site.
The facility opened in 2019 as part of a government effort to expand medical training capacity across Jharkhand, a state where large areas had long lacked trained doctors. It was one of several new medical colleges set up around that time to address this shortage.
The college is named after Phulo and Jhano Murmu, two women from the Santali community who resisted colonial rule in the 19th century. Seeing their names on a medical institution in a predominantly tribal region carries a meaning that locals feel strongly about.
The hospital draws patients from across Dumka district and nearby areas, so the outpatient section can get very crowded during morning hours. Arriving early in the day gives the best chance of being seen without a long wait.
Students admitted here are required to serve in rural or underserved areas after graduation as a condition of their admission, not just a recommendation. This is written into the terms of enrollment, making it one of the few medical colleges in the region where rural posting is a formal obligation.
