Veerateeswarar temple, Thiruvirkudi

Veerateeswarar temple, Thiruvirkudi, Hindu temple in Thiruvirkudi, India

Veerateeswarar temple is a Hindu sanctuary featuring a five-tiered rajagopuram tower that rises prominently above the surrounding landscape. A sacred tank called Chakra Theertham sits near the eastern entrance and serves ritual purposes for worshippers.

This sanctuary originates from the 9th century during the Chola dynasty period when such temples became centers of faith and architecture. The Thanjavur Nayaks subsequently reshaped the structure with major additions centuries later.

The temple conducts ritual worship four times daily using traditional instruments such as nagaswaram and tavil that echo through the courtyards. These practices remain central to how people experience and move through the sacred space.

The sanctuary sits roughly 4 kilometers along the road connecting Mayiladuthurai and Thiruvarur and welcomes visitors from early morning through late evening. Plan to reach it by local transportation since the location lies slightly outside town areas.

This sanctuary belongs to the Ashta Veeratanam group and marks the location where Shiva defeated the demon Jalandhara using a divine chariot. This legendary connection holds special meaning for pilgrims who visit.
