Sthalasayana Perumal Temple, Tirusirupuliyur, Hindu temple in Nagapattinam district, India.
The Sthalasayana Perumal Temple, also known as the Tirusirupuliyur temple, is a Hindu temple in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, built in the Dravidian style. The complex includes tiered gateway towers called gopurams, carved stone walls, and open courtyards arranged around the main shrine.
The temple is counted among the 108 Divya Desams, the Vaishnava shrines celebrated in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, a body of Tamil devotional hymns composed between the 6th and 9th centuries. Being part of this canon established the site as an important place of pilgrimage across South India.
The presiding deity is worshipped in a reclining posture, which is uncommon among Vaishnava shrines in this part of Tamil Nadu. Pilgrims come specifically to see this form of the god and to take part in the daily worship that follows the Tenkalai tradition.
The temple opens in the morning and again in the evening, with certain windows reserved for ceremonies. Checking the schedule before your visit is helpful, especially if you want to be present during one of the worship sessions.
The name Sthalasayana comes from Sanskrit and means something like "resting on the ground," referring directly to the posture of the deity inside. This type of naming, where a temple takes its identity from the god's physical position, is rare in the Divya Desam canon.
