Sri Sivalokanathar Temple, Tirupunkur

Sri Sivalokanathar Temple, Tirupunkur, Hindu temple in Tirupunkur, Tamil Nadu, India

Sri Sivalokanathar Temple in Tirupunkur is a stone sanctuary built in Dravidian style, featuring carved pillars, a central shrine for Sivalokanathar, and several halls dedicated to other deities including Soundaryanayaki. The complex displays characteristic stone carvings on its columns and inner sanctuaries that define this architectural tradition.

The temple was established during the Chola dynasty period when a ruler named Rajaraja granted lands to the sanctuary. This donation came after special ceremonies conducted by the poet Sundarar.

The temple features in sacred texts called Thevaram, composed by three saints who praised Lord Shiva at this location. These writings remain central to Hindu devotion and show how this place has been honored across centuries.

The sanctuary welcomes visitors daily with opening hours in the early morning and late afternoon. Regular bus services from the nearby town of Mayiladuthurai provide access to the temple, making it easy to visit without a personal vehicle.

A notable story from the temple tells how a Nandi statue shifted position through divine intervention. This occurred to allow the devout Nandanar to view the main shrine from outside.
