Thiruvanpurushothamam

Thiruvanpurushothamam is a Vishnu temple in Thirunangur surrounded by rice paddies and marked by a three-tiered tower structure. This building houses standing statues of Purushotthaman and his consort Purushotthama Nayagi.

The temple gained recognition as one of the 108 Divya Desams, sacred Vishnu sites praised in the Divyaprabhandham hymns by revered Azhwar saints. This status established it as a major pilgrimage destination for Hindu devotees.

Each January, the temple becomes the center of the Thirumangai Azhwar Mangalasasana Utsavam festival, where deity statues are carried on elaborately decorated mounts through the surrounding area. The celebrations involve traditional music and prayers that bring the local community together.

The temple conducts four daily prayer rituals in the morning, afternoon, evening, and night hours, each accompanied by decoration and food offerings. Visitors should expect traditional Hindu practices and dress modestly when entering.

Local traditions connect this place to a mythological story where Shiva's cosmic dance after a tragic event led to the founding of eleven Vishnu shrines across the region. This legend gives it a special spiritual significance among the area's holy sites.
