The New Jerusalem Church displays brick exteriors, stained glass windows, and tiled brick spires within the Fort Dansborg complex in Tharangambadi.
Established on October 11, 1718, the church emerged during the Danish colonial period as part of the Protestant missionary expansion in South India.
The church became a center for Tamil language development when missionaries translated the New Testament into Tamil at the printing press inside Fort Dansborg.
Regular religious services occur daily at the church, which underwent renovations in 2001 with support from the Danish royal family.
The church stands as the second Protestant establishment in India, following the nearby Zion Church built in 1701 within the same fort complex.
