Zion Church, Tharangambadi

Zion Church is a Gothic-style building in Tharangambadi, located near Fort Dansborg in the Nagapattinam district. The structure features brick walls, colored glass windows, and distinctive tiled spires.

Reverend Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg founded this Protestant church in 1717 when Tharangambadi was a Danish colonial settlement. The building was established during a period of strong European presence in this part of India.

The church reflects the connection between European colonists and the local population during the colonial period. Visitors today see a building that shows how different communities shared this place for worship and community life.

The church is open for visitors on certain days and is managed by the Lutheran community. Check in advance about opening hours since worship services and religious events take priority.

The site housed one of India's first printing presses that operated in the early 18th century. This press produced the first Tamil translation of the New Testament.
