Christ Church, Dr.Ambedkar Nagar, Anglican church in Dr.Ambedkar Nagar, India.
Christ Church is an Anglican church in the Dr. Ambedkar Nagar neighborhood of Indore, built on a teak framework with brick and lime mortar walls and a single transept. A narrow steeple rises above the surrounding area and is visible from the street.
The church was built between 1818 and 1823 by troops from the Warwickshire and Brecknockshire regiments during the British cantonment period in Mhow. It was the first place of worship in the area and served the military community that had settled there.
Memorial plaques on the walls honor people who lived or served in Mhow, drawing visitors from Britain, Scotland, Ireland, and Australia who trace family or military ties to the old cantonment. These plaques turn the building into a place of personal memory, not just a place of worship.
The church sits in a populated neighborhood and is easy to spot from the main road, making it straightforward to reach on foot or by auto-rickshaw. Visiting in the morning generally gives you better light inside and a calmer visit.
After the 1857 uprising, rifle holders were fitted into the church pews so that British soldiers could keep their weapons secured during worship. Some of these fittings can still be seen in the pews today.
