Akbar Bhawan

Akbar Bhawan is a government office building in Chanakyapuri that stands as a concrete and glass structure along Satya Marg. The building displays modern lines with sun-blocking fins and an open staircase that exposes its structural framework and solid architectural character.

The building was originally constructed as Akbar Hotel in 1969 before the Ministry of External Affairs acquired it in 1986. This change of purpose transformed it from a private hotel operation into a center for government administration and academic activity.

The South Asian learning center here brings together students from eight SAARC nations in shared classrooms and corridors. This institution creates daily interaction between young people from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

The building contains the offices of the Ministry of External Affairs along with a banking counter for everyday financial needs. Keep in mind that access to certain areas may be restricted and visitors may need to register at the entrance.

Architects Shiv Nath Prasad and Mahendra Raj designed the structure following principles similar to those of Unite d'Habitation in Marseille. This design philosophy appears in how the building combines multiple functions within a tightly organized form.
