Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Contemporary art museum in District 6, Tehran, Iran.
Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art is an art museum in District 6 of Tehran that shows work from the 19th and 20th centuries across several exhibition halls. The concrete and stone complex includes a sculpture garden in Laleh Park with pieces by sculptors from different countries.
Architect Kamran Diba designed the museum in the 1970s and integrated Persian elements such as wind towers into the modern structure. The institution opened in 1977 and became part of Iranian national heritage.
The museum name reflects the mission to show art movements from Persia and other countries created in recent centuries. Visitors see paintings and sculptures by local artists alongside pieces from Europe and America in the permanent galleries.
The building opens between 10 am and 5 pm with advance booking and offers access to galleries, a library, a cinema hall, and a café. Visitors can explore the spaces on multiple levels and walk through the outdoor area in the park.
After the 1979 revolution, many paintings from Western collections spent three decades in the archives. The institution only began showing these works to the public again gradually after that period.
