Badab-e Surt, Natural mineral springs and terraces in Poshtkuh Rural District, Iran
Badab-e Surt is a natural mineral and salt spring with terraced pools located in a rural area of Iran. Two separate springs flow downhill, creating step-like formations where water settles in different colored basins caused by varying mineral content and iron oxide deposits.
The terraces formed over geological time through continuous deposit of calcium carbonate and iron oxide from two distinct springs during ancient periods. This natural building process continues today as minerals settle and accumulate.
Local people have traditionally treated joint pain and skin issues by bathing in the mineral-rich water from the first spring. These natural remedies remain part of everyday wellness practices in the region.
The site sits in a mountainous region and is reached by a combination of paved and unpaved roads that can vary with the seasons. Wear sturdy footwear to navigate the uneven terrain and plan to arrive early to make the most of daylight.
Each of the two springs produces water with completely different compositions: one releases salty mineral water while the other contains high iron oxide concentrations. These differences are responsible for the distinct color variations visible across the pools.
