Saryazd Castle, Ancient fortress in Mehriz County, Iran
Saryazd Castle is an ancient fortress in Mehriz County with three concentric walls and tall towers. A protective moat six meters wide and four meters deep surrounds the structure, with a wooden bridge providing entrance.
The fortress was built approximately 1800 years ago during the Sassanian period, with its inner core remaining intact. The outer sections were added later during the Safavid era.
The architecture blends elements from multiple Persian periods, from Sassanian times through the Safavid era. You can see these layers of the past reflected in the walls and vaulted passages throughout the structure.
You can explore the fortress across three levels connected by narrow adobe stairs and vaulted passages. A flashlight is helpful since many interior chambers are dark, and sturdy shoes are recommended for the uneven surfaces.
The interior contains approximately 468 chambers that once served as safes for local families to store their valuables. This collection of private storage rooms makes it one of the largest such facilities from the ancient world.
