Rab'-e Rashidi, Educational building complex in Tabriz, Iran.
Rab'-e Rashidi is a building complex in Tabriz that includes schools, mosques, libraries, guest houses, baths, orphanages, and hospitals spread across the grounds. The ruins visible today show masonry bases and mosaic pieces from the original 14th century structure and later modifications made during the Safavid period.
Rashid al-Din Hamadani founded this complex in 1309 as an early international learning institution during the Ilkhanid period. The project represented an ambitious effort to gather different fields of knowledge and study in a single location.
The complex served as a working center where craftspeople produced manuscripts and copied important religious and scholarly texts. Many people labored together there to preserve and share knowledge across different cultures and traditions.
The site sits at the foot of Bilankooh Mountain and remains accessible as a ruin where current excavations reveal the original layout. Walking through the grounds, visitors can explore different sections of what was once a sprawling educational complex.
The foundation received substantial financial support that allowed it to employ a diverse community of scholars and craftspeople. This generous funding made the institution remarkably comprehensive in scope for its era.
