Ferdowsi Mausoleum, Marble mausoleum in Tus, Iran

Description

Ferdowsi Mausoleum is a marble monument in Tus north of Mashhad, standing about 16 meters tall with a square footprint. The structure features marble columns and faience decorations, set within expansive grounds that also hold a museum, library, and other facilities.

History

The original tomb underwent several reconstructions over time until architects Hossein Lorzadeh and Hooshang Seyhoun completed the current structure between 1934 and 1969. This modern building replaced all previous versions entirely.

Culture

The mausoleum displays stone carvings showing scenes from the Shahnameh, Persia's legendary epic poem, with Ferdowsi's own verses written in Persian calligraphy across the walls. These writings honor the poet's central role in Persian literature.

Practical

The complex opens daily from 9 AM to 7 PM during summer months and includes museum galleries, a library holding about 9,000 books, and administrative spaces to explore. Plan to spend time viewing both the mausoleum itself and the surrounding grounds.

Did you know?

The structure blends ancient Persian architectural elements with modern design, displaying 20 marble columns on the lower level and 8 more on the upper section. This mix of classical and contemporary forms makes the building architecturally noteworthy.
