Tomb of Shams Tabrizi, tomb in Iran
The Tomb of Shams Tabrizi is a mausoleum in the city of Khoy in western Iran consisting of a simple brick building next to a tall brick tower. The site sits in a quiet park with trees and benches where a stone slab marks the burial place, and the adjacent tower has a round shape with ornamental brick decoration in its middle section.
Shams Tabrizi was a Persian mystic of the 13th century and the spiritual guide of the famous poet Rumi, whose life and work he profoundly shaped. The tower next to the tomb was built by Shah Ismail Safavi to express great reverence for this important spiritual figure.
The name Shams Tabrizi means "Sun of Tabriz" and references his origins in that city. Today visitors use the space to reflect on the spiritual tradition he represents, and it remains a place of quiet reverence for those connected to Persian mysticism.
The site is easy to reach through a paved path and has benches in the adjoining park for visitors who wish to spend time there. Because the site is rarely crowded, you can walk around at your own pace and experience the surroundings in a relaxed manner.
The adjacent tower contains a spiral staircase inside that winds upward from the entrance and is oriented toward the Qibla, the direction Muslims face when praying. This architectural feature shows how religious practice was built into the monument's design.
