Soltaniyeh Dome

The Soltaniyeh Dome is an octagonal structure rising to approximately 49 meters, featuring a double-shell dome constructed of brick and mortar with turquoise glazed tiles. The outer and inner shells create the overall form that visitors see from both inside and outside.

This mausoleum was completed around 1312 and served as the burial place of the Ilkhanid ruler Oljeitu during Mongol rule in Persia. The structure's completion occurred when Persian architecture was evolving under Mongol patronage.

The interior surfaces display ornamental tilework and geometric designs that showcase the craftsmanship of 14th-century Persian artisans. These decorative elements remain visible throughout the space and reveal the technical skill required to create them.

Visitors can access multiple levels through stairs to examine the structural design and architectural features from different viewpoints. The interior arrangement allows exploration at various heights, though climbing requires some physical effort.

The building demonstrated the first known use of a double-shell dome design in Iran, setting a precedent that influenced later monuments. This structural innovation was eventually adopted in the design of other important buildings across different regions.
