Jameh Mosque of Sojas

Jameh Mosque of Sojas, Seljuk mosque in Khodabandeh County, Iran

The Jameh Mosque of Sojas is a Seljuk religious building in Khodabandeh County constructed from brick and mortar with relatively small proportions, measuring approximately 11 meters in length and width with a height of 14 meters. The structure contains prayer halls and includes spaces that follow traditional mosque design for worship and preparation.

Construction of this mosque began around 1100 during the Seljuk dynasty, when Persian regions experienced major architectural development. The building later witnessed the Ilkhanid period and bears traces of multiple construction and design influences from these successive eras.

This mosque reflects how Persian building styles blend with Islamic worship practices, with its layout designed for community prayer. The geometric forms and spatial arrangement show principles that shape how visitors move through and use the space.

Visitors should enter respectfully, particularly during prayer times, and observe local dress conventions when inside. The relatively compact size means the entire structure can be explored quickly, but taking time to examine the construction details and carved elements rewards careful observation.

The building displays both Seljuk and Ilkhanid construction styles in its details, making it possible to compare two different medieval building phases in one structure. The mihrab, the prayer niche, clearly shows these shifts in design approach over time.
