Katale Khor, Natural limestone cave in Khodabandeh County, Iran

Katale Khor is an extensive limestone cave system in the Khodabandeh region with multiple levels and distinct sections. The system features numerous calcite formations, corridors, and large chambers spanning approximately 13 kilometers in total length.

The cave system formed around 120 million years ago during the Jurassic period through the development of limestone layers. It was officially discovered and explored in 1959 by Iranian researchers led by Seyyed Asadullah Jamali.

The name comes from Persian and means 'mountain of the sun', with 'Katale' referring to a low mountain and 'Khor' derived from Avestan meaning sun. The name reflects how local people traditionally described this natural landmark.

Visitors can explore about 2 kilometers of the system on guided tours, while deeper sections remain restricted to specialists and researchers. The cave maintains a consistently cool temperature, so appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended.

Researchers have found evidence suggesting an underground connection to another major cave located about 100 kilometers away. This possible link reveals the complexity of the region's groundwater system and geological structures.
