Dashkasan Temple, Buddhist temple in Viyar, Iran.

Dashkasan Temple is a stone and stucco shrine in the mountains of Soltaniyeh built within rock caves arranged in a semicircular formation. The walls are decorated throughout with floral patterns and carved embellishments that cover the surfaces.

Four Chinese craftsmen excavated and carved the temple during the Ilkhanid dynasty around 1300 under supervision of Mongol ruler Öljaitü in Persia. This creation demonstrates the artistic skills that were encouraged under Mongol rule.

The temple reflects a blend of Buddhist and Islamic design elements, visible in its carved dragons and a prayer niche aligned toward Mecca. This combination of two traditions speaks to the cultural exchanges that happened under Mongol rule.

The site sits in mountain terrain and requires a drive from Soltaniyeh city, with walking necessary to reach the caves. Wear appropriate footwear and allow time for the climb, especially during warmer months.

The shrine was long forgotten before being rediscovered by the art world, and remains virtually unknown to many outside the region even today. This obscurity adds to its quiet character, as it attracts few visitors and remains undisturbed in its setting.
