Rakhtshooy Khaneh Edifice, Historical laundry house in Zanjan, Iran.
Rakhtshooy Khaneh is a protected laundry house in Zanjan with a main hall where eleven symmetric columns divide the space into two separate washing areas. The building also includes administrative and residential sections and now operates as an anthropology museum.
Two brothers named Mashad Akbar and Mashadi Esmail built this structure in 1307 according to the Iranian calendar during a period of transition between major dynasties. The building dates from an era when such communal facilities were being established in Zanjan.
The building was where women from the city gathered to wash clothes and spend time together in a shared space. The layout with its water channels was designed specifically to make this daily task practical and social.
The museum is located near several well-known sites such as the Zanjan Mosque and bazaar, which makes it easy to combine visits in one area. You can view the structure from outside or explore the interior, which now displays the museum's collections.
This building is the only surviving example of a house purpose-built for communal laundry in Iran, showing how such tasks were organized. The water canal system was a practical engineering solution that made washing efficient.
