Pinerolo, Administrative center in Piedmont, Italy
Pinerolo is a town in Piedmont, located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Turin. The Chisone river runs through the municipal territory, while the old center stretches along several hills at the foot of the Alps.
Emperor Otto II first mentioned the place in a document for the Bishops of Turin in the year 981. Over the centuries control shifted between Italian noble families and the French crown, until the area finally passed to the House of Savoy.
The name comes from the Middle Ages and refers to a pine forest that once covered the surrounding hills. Today narrow streets and arcades fill the old center, where market stalls and local shops define daily routines.
The railway station sits near the old center and offers regular connections to Turin. Buses run to the surrounding valleys and mountain villages, with frequency depending on the day of the week and the season.
A cavalry academy has operated here for several centuries and still trains officers and riders today. The stables and training grounds lie on the edge of town and open occasionally for visitors.
