Sestriere, Ski resort in Metropolitan City of Turin, Italy.
Sestriere is a commune in the Metropolitan City of Turin and rests above two thousand meters among meadows and rocky ridges. Wooden chalets and hotel blocks from different decades spread across the slopes, while chairlifts climb toward the surrounding peaks.
The settlement began in the nineteen thirties as a planned winter sports complex for the Agnelli industrial family. After decades as a private resort it gradually opened to the public with new buildings and expanded slopes.
The municipality sits at a crossing point once used by shepherds and traders moving between valleys and peaks. Today skiers and walkers follow trails shaped by centuries of mountain movement before roads and lifts appeared.
Visitors arriving in winter find open lifts and groomed runs across different difficulty levels. In summer the same heights offer hiking and cycling routes once snow and ice have cleared.
Two tall towers from the nineteen thirties still stand at the edge of the settlement and once served as hotel buildings with circular floor plans. These structures count among the early examples of rationalist architecture in the Italian Alps.
