Cesana San Sicario, place in Italy
Cesana San Sicario is a sports park in the Alps, developed as a modern ski resort with runs of varying difficulty and mountain facilities. The area encompasses several villages, including historic Sansicario Borgo with 17th-century houses and modern Sansicario Alto at 1,700 meters elevation.
The village of San Sicario was founded in 1971 as a tourist destination, designed by French engineer Laurent Chappy to harmonize with the mountain landscape. In 2006 it hosted Winter Olympic events including downhill skiing and biathlon competitions.
San Sicario is a mountain village set on a natural terrace with wide valley views. The architecture blends into the landscape through small, dispersed buildings and hidden pathways that create a quiet, private atmosphere.
Access is by car via highway A32 toward Oulx or by train to Oulx station, with buses and taxis connecting to the village. A practical monorail designed by Pininfarina links different village sections, making travel between slopes and accommodations straightforward.
Road traffic is deliberately hidden underground or in garages to preserve quiet streets above, an unusual planning approach that lets pedestrians and skiers share the surface undisturbed. This thoughtful design has made the resort a peaceful place where vehicles are out of sight and mind.
