Fort of Mount Chaberton

The Fort of Mount Chaberton is a military installation at 3,130 meters (10,270 feet) on the border between Italy and France, featuring eight reinforced concrete turrets equipped with 149mm cannons. The structure spreads across multiple connected levels and underground spaces carved into the mountainside.

The Kingdom of Italy built this fortification between 1898 and 1910 as part of a comprehensive defense system along the Alpine border. The installation was designed to protect the valleys below from potential French military operations.

The fort represents a significant example of Italian military engineering from the late 19th century, demonstrating the period's architectural and strategic capabilities.

The site is only accessible during the snow-free months and requires mountain equipment and sure-footedness. Visitors can start the climb from the village of Clavière or use the old military road from Fenils.

This fortification stands at one of Europe's highest military positions and houses an extensive network of underground tunnels and casemates. The underground spaces extend across multiple levels deep into the mountain.
