Ponte tibetano Cesana Claviere, Suspension footbridge in Cesana Torinese, Italy
The Ponte tibetano Cesana Claviere is a pedestrian suspension bridge that crosses the San Gervasio Gorge, linking the municipalities of Cesana Torinese and Claviere. The structure is 468 meters long and made of wooden planks held by ropes strung high above the rocky gorge floor.
The bridge was completed in 2023, making it one of the newest structures of its kind in the Cottian Alps. It was built to create a direct link between two neighboring communities that were previously not connected by a path above the gorge.
The bridge draws visitors who want to experience the crossing as a small personal challenge in an Alpine setting. Many people stop halfway to look down into the gorge, where the rocky walls and the stream far below become the main spectacle.
Children under 6 years old or shorter than about 4 feet (1.20 meters) are not allowed to cross, so it is worth checking this before you go. The bridge is open every day in July and August, and only on weekends in June and September.
The bridge is made of around 1,350 individual wooden planks, each one attached separately with ropes, so every step feels and sounds different. This means the structure moves and responds as you walk, which is something many visitors do not expect before they set foot on it.
