Civitanova Marche, Coastal municipality in Province of Macerata, Italy.
Civitanova Marche is a coastal municipality in the Province of Macerata in central Italy, stretching along the Adriatic Sea. The settlement spreads across several districts including Centro, Fontespina, and San Gabriele, located on flat alluvial terrain near the river mouth.
In 268 BC the Romans captured the settlement of Cluana from the Piceni tribe and developed the infrastructure of the region. Centuries later, around 1550, the Ducal Palace was built, which still shows the architectural legacy of the Renaissance today.
The name derives from the Latin Cluentis, referring to its connection with the Chienti river that still shapes the landscape today. Visitors can see traditional markets and small workshops in the old town streets that continue local craft traditions.
The town is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Ancona and 25 kilometers (16 miles) east of Macerata on the Adriatic coast. Its position between two larger cities makes it a practical base for travelers moving along the shoreline.
Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned the construction of Villa Eugenia in 1797, which later became the residence of Empress Eugenia De Montijo. This connection to the French imperial family gives the place a special historical character that remains visible in the architecture today.
