Province of Ogliastra, Former administrative province in eastern Sardinia, Italy
The Province of Ogliastra is a former administrative region in eastern Sardinia situated between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Gennargentu mountains. The area comprised roughly 23 municipalities, with Tortolì and Lanusei serving as the main towns connected by regional roads through mountainous terrain.
The region was formally established as a province in 2001 during an administrative reform of Sardinia. By 2016, most municipalities were merged into the Province of Nuoro, dissolving this administrative division.
The name Ogliastra comes from the olive trees that characterize the landscape, with ancient specimens found throughout the territory. People have cultivated these trees for generations, and they remain part of the everyday scenery in villages and countryside.
The area is best explored by car, as regional roads connect the municipalities throughout the territory. The mountainous landscape requires some driving skill, but well-marked routes lead to the main towns and through the surrounding countryside.
With only around 31 inhabitants per square kilometer, this territory was one of Italy's most sparsely populated administrative regions. Such low population density meant that large portions of the landscape remained wild and untouched by human settlement.
