Marina di Carrara, seaside resort in Italy
Marina di Carrara is a coastal hamlet in the province of Massa-Carrara in Tuscany, known for its wide sandy beach and proximity to the Apuan Alps. The settlement extends from the Parmignola stream to the port jetty and features both private bathing establishments and four free beaches, including one designated for dogs.
The settlement originated in the 18th century as part of a port project by the Dukes of Modena to establish a safe harbor on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Development accelerated after 1851 when work on the modern port began, including construction of wooden piers and later railway connections for marble transport.
Marina di Carrara adopted its current name in the early 1900s as it transformed from a functional port into a leisure destination. Visitors today experience how marble craftsmanship influences local life, from workshops displaying stone carvings to sculptures placed throughout town.
The area is easy to explore on foot, and most visitors walk or bike along the coast. Buses and car rentals are available if you want to visit other locations in Tuscany, and being close to Carrara makes it simple to combine several day trips.
The Colonna del Sole, a large stone column with water jets, was erected in 2011 to symbolize the connection between land and sea. This striking sculpture is a landmark that catches the eye of anyone walking through town.
