Colonia Olivetti, Holiday camp in Marina di Massa, Italy.
Colonia Olivetti is a holiday camp in Marina di Massa built near the Tyrrhenian Sea, featuring multiple structures including dormitories, dining halls, an infirmary, and recreation areas organized around a central courtyard. The site accommodates up to 120 children and includes ground-floor recreational spaces and dining rooms with large windows that let in daylight.
Architect Annibale Fiocchi designed the camp in 1948 for children of Olivetti company employees, and construction lasted approximately ten years until completion. This facility became an important retreat for the families of the manufacturing company during the postwar period.
The rooms and hallways display artistic decorations created by Egidio Bonfante and Marcello Nizzoli, which give the common spaces a thoughtful visual character. These works shape how the interior feels and make the shared areas more engaging for visitors.
The grounds are easy to walk through, with numerous outdoor terraces and sitting areas that take advantage of the coastal location. The large windows throughout the buildings ensure that indoor spaces remain bright and connected to the surrounding landscape during daylight hours.
The buildings follow a rationalist architectural style with connected porticos and sun terraces positioned to encourage gathering and play among residents. The design shows how functionality was linked to the social needs of those using the space.
