Colonia Torino

Colonia Torino, Former children's holiday camp in Marina di Massa, Italy.

Description

Colonia Torino is a former children's holiday camp on the Tuscan coast consisting of six rectangular pavilions connected by porticoes and arranged around garden areas. The complex stretches more than 200 meters in length with four floors of accommodation spaces and sits along the seafront promenade.

History

The complex was designed in 1936 by architects Ettore Sotsass and Alfio Guaitoli and opened in 1938 as a summer accommodation facility. It was built during a period when such purpose-built camps represented an important approach to organized holiday programs.

Culture

The building uses Carrara marble tiles in its decorative details, a choice that connects it to local Tuscan craftsmanship and regional building traditions. Visitors can see how these materials shape the overall appearance and tie the structure to its coastal setting.

Practical

The building is located at Via Bondano a Mare 51 along the seafront promenade and is accessible from nearby public pathways. The position offers direct access to the beach and coastal surroundings, making it straightforward to explore the area.

Did you know?

The facades feature a carefully arranged pattern of circular and rectangular windows that creates visual rhythm in the Mediterranean sun. This intentional design choice gives the structure a distinctive character rarely seen in similar period structures.
