Cividale del Friuli

The town stretches along the Natisone River, surrounded by the eastern Alps foothills, featuring narrow stone streets and medieval architecture at 135 meters elevation.

Founded as Forum Iulii in 50 BC, the settlement became the first capital of the Lombard Kingdom in 568 and housed the Patriarchs of Aquileia until 1238.

The National Archaeological Museum displays Roman artifacts, Lombard treasures, and medieval collections within the Renaissance-style Palazzo dei Provveditori Veneti.

The town center provides direct access to numerous historical buildings, including the Cathedral, Devil's Bridge, and Celtic Hypogeum through marked pedestrian paths.

Every January 6th, residents celebrate Messa dello Spadone, commemorating the 1366 arrival of Patriarch Marquard through a ceremonial sword-bearing procession.
